“Birds of a feather, we flock together!”
Some of the best party themes can come from just looking around your home for inspiration. In trying to decide a theme for a party we were planning for January, I wanted to find something that would be both fun and affordable. I was happened to glance at our cute winter bird figurines and the idea hit. Why not do a bird themed party?! We had a few other bird figurines throughout the house that I could build the decor from. And everything else that was used were items that I had throughout the house.
Potlucks are my favorite way to throw a party. Not only does it save you time and money having to prepare all the food, but you get to try and experience new foods from your guests. To go along with the bird theme, I asked each of our guests to bring something with a bird-related name. The idea was to be as creative as possible. For example, our Vegan Stuffed Mushrooms became “Nuthatch Nests” and our Truffled Potato Skins became “Mockingbird Eggs”. The response was so much fun! We had “Painted Bunting Cake”, “Cardinal Crostini”, “Birds of Paradise Spread”, “Swallow Soup”, and many others. Before the guests arrived I created food cards for people to write their creative name, the actual dish name, and whether it was vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.
I created the cards on the computer by finding some bird clip art and designing labels to go with the theme. The labels then carried into the favor bags given out at the end of the night. Each bag was addressed to specific guests, giving a more personal touch.
Inside the bags we gave each guest a jar of Cardamom Pear Butter (watch for the recipe to come in a future post), a bag of birdseed, and a mix CD that we created in which all of the song titles included the word “bird”. The CD cover was designed using the same motif as the rest of the labels throughout the party and printed off using colored card stock.
It was a great and enjoyable party. Our guests had fun with the theme just as much as we did. And we kept the cost down by using the resources around us!
What a fantastic post! Thanks so much for sharing about this clever theme. You have inspired me and I am going to do something like this for sure. Cheers! Gina
Thanks so much Gina! I’m so happy to have inspired you. And thanks so much for stopping by!

LOVE this Kenley!! What a brilliant and fun idea! The party is much more fun when the guests are participating, and they get much more into it! My daughter and I host an annual summer party, cook your app off, and I am going to suggest a theme this year and ask the guest to do what you did, what a great twist! Thanks so much!
