Happy Earth Day everyone!!
‘L’ and I got married almost a year ago in our backyard in a small and quaint ceremony. We love gardening and we are also work hard to be environmentally conscious. So the idea of planting a tree as part of our wedding ceremony was the perfect fit. Planting and growing a tree is a great way to symbolize marriage. You have to care for it and nurture it in order for it to grow and be strong enough to withstand all the elements. Our very dear friend Kristin gave us a fig tree that she had been raising in a container so that we could plant it in the ground and it could begin its next stage of life. It is also important to note that Kristin was also our wedding officiant. You can read more about the actual ceremony that we performed last year HERE.
Now we look forward to our fig tree producing fruit so that we can incorporate another love, cooking!
Kenley, I didn’t know you just got married a year ago…you are still newleyweds♥ How precious to get married in your own backyard.
Yup 🙂
It was wonderful getting married in our backyard! It was so intimate and special… and it is great having a loving feeling of being in a special place just by walking out the back door.
What a sweet and thoughtful gift! How lovely that you can think of your friend as this tree grows alongside your relationship. I’m also looking forward to your fig recipes sometime down the line.
Alicia
Yeah, it was really wonderful that she gave us the tree. And yes — looking forward to having LOADS of fig recipes to share! 🙂
This is just lovely!
Thanks so much Katherine! 🙂
What a great way to celebrate your lives together. You will always have that to symbolize your love.
Thanks Cynthia! It’s a wonderful thing to be able to look out at the tree getting bigger and stronger and know that our love does the same thing each day!
What a lovely way of symbolizing your marriage. Reminds me of that Kahlil Gibran poem (maybe the wrong number of trees, though . . . .).
Thank you! And that is such a great poem! 🙂

Happy Earth Day and happy almost anniversary Kenley!
I love figs – discovered the joy of fresh figs when I lived in Australia. They are such beautiful trees too. How lovely to have one in your yard! Lucky you.
Thanks and Happy Earth Day to you as well!
And yes, we are so excited for when we have crops of figs. Such a tasty fruit. 🙂

I just love this! My best friend is getting married this weekend, too (it’s also a backyard ceremony–they are the loveliest), so I’ll have to suggest that she and her husband-to-be do this at some point. What a sweet idea.
Thanks Megan! Yeah, it was a really special part of the ceremony and we did it instead of unity candles or combining sand or… But even if your best friend and her husband do this as a private thing together down the road, it really makes for a wonderful symbol to look out at as a reminder of your love. Oh…and with it being this weekend, keep in mind that Friday is Arbor Day 🙂

This is just the sweetest, Kenley! On the day I was born, my father planted a pear tree outside my bedroom window and it was always so special to know it was my tree and see it grow as I grew up myself.
Happy almost anniversary and Happy Earth Day! I’m going to celebrate with a walk outside after lunch 🙂
Thanks Eileen! And that’s lovely to hear about YOUR pear tree! 🙂 Such a great thing for your dad to do!
Happy Earth Day!
I agree, a tree is a perfect symbol and a nice thing to do for the environment too. Happy Earth Day Kenley.
Thanks so much! And Happy Earth Day!
Kenley
This was such a sweet post, Kenley! A tree makes a perfect symbol 🙂 Have a happy Earth Day!
Thanks! We are so happy that we did it!
Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day and almost anniversary. What a most excellent way of getting married. That’s what it’s all about, you guys have it right, blending all of the life fulfilling elements together, the best recipe of all. An excellent post Kenley, thank you ~ Penny
Thanks so much Penny! And that is after all what marriage is all about… the blending of culture, of family, of hobbies, of souls.
Happy Earth Day!
Happy just-about-a-year anniversary! Love the thought of planting a tree for it! Congratulations and Happy Earth Day too!
Thanks so much Joan! And actually, we planted the tree last year at the wedding ceremony. 🙂
Oh I love that! Such a great thing to do — you’ll get to watch it grow every year! That’s a cool tradition!
Thanks Joan! It truly is something special 🙂
so nice, getting married in a special place and planting a tree; so lovely! 🙂
Thanks so much! It is wonderful having that special and sacred place being somewhere we are and can be at everyday! 🙂
This is wonderful! Happy Anniversary and Earth Day 🙂

Happy Anniversary dear Kenley and L. What a great idea. Love to hear about the fruits in the future posts. 😀
Thanks Fae! Appreciate that! And yes…once we have plentiful fruit, I will be posting fig recipes like crazy! 🙂
Happy Anniversary! How meaningful to be married in your own yard! The tree will be so much fun to watch grow, what a special memory you are creating!
Thanks so much Jenna! Yeah, we are so incredibly happy that we made the choice to get married in our backyard and do the tree ceremony. It is such a special thing to watch it grow and to be able to be present everyday in a space that has so much meaning in our hearts.
Kenley
I read your tree planting ceremony post and I was delighted with the ” encourage each other” sentiment. Encouragement and praise are definitely tools of growth. Happy Anniversary! I love “fig” everything!
Thanks so much! Yes, Encouragement is such a cornerstone!!
Kenley
Happiest of Anniversaries to you two! Your ceremony sounded like it was beautiful and intimate and one for the record books. I love the idea of sealing the deal by planting a tree as part of the ceremony. Thanks for sharing about this beautiful moment!
Thanks so much Lauren! It was very small and intimate…just the way we wanted. 🙂 And now every time we are in our backyard it reminds us of how special of a place it is.
