Croutons are one of the easiest, cost-effective, and delicious things to make from scratch. It is cheaper to make croutons to buy them PLUS then they are fresher and more flavorful. You can also keep things simple like the recipe that I have below…OR, you can add additional seasonings like garlic salt, oregano, thyme, red pepper flakes, etc. (Note — if you add a seasoning that contains salt, like garlic salt, omit the use of salt in the basic recipe). Homemade croutons are also both perfect for anyone following a gluten-free or paleo diet. Simply use your favorite gluten-free bread.
Homemade Croutons
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cut the bread of your choice into 1/2 inch squares. If the bread is fresh, let it sit out in the open air of the kitchen for an hour or so to make it firmer and a bit stale. It is important not to toss the bread cubes with the oil and seasonings if too soft. They will absorb too much of the oil.
Coat a jelly pan with cooking spray.
Place bread cubes in a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper (as well as additional seasonings if using). Toss to coat.
Pour bread cubes into jelly pan and create a single layer.
Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes. Take out every 5 minutes to stir. Croutons are done when golden brown and crusty.
Use with salads, soups, or just to munch on. 🙂

Now that I am making my own bread, this recipe will come in handy when the bread becomes stale. Thank you for sharing this kenley….danny.
Glad you like it, Danny. I think you’ll find that once you start making your own croutons, you’ll never want to buy them again. (much like making your own bread) 🙂

These look delicious. If only I ate bread … Maybe I can make them next time we have dinner guests!
They would pry like them quite a bit — and you wouldn’t need a lot of bread to make it happen. (so you wouldn’t have extra bread laying around).

Good tip about making sure the bread is stale…I’ve made that mistake before! Looks yummy 🙂
Thanks!! 🙂
These look so yummy…the problem is I would just want the whole bowl of them with no salad☺
Hehe!! To say that I haven’t munched on a few without salad…:-) Taste testing you know!

Croutons are so easy to prepare, I don’t know why anyone would buy them.
I completely agree! 🙂
